February 18th GFHS Meeting

10am Saturday February 18, 2017.

Speaker: Dr. Kathleen Brokke, Environmental Historian
“Going Wild in the Garden”

The monarch butterfly sits on top of an ancient cup plant, Silphium perfoliatum.

My yard is a combination native intermixed with hybridized and cultivar and even a few vegetable plants with hardy fruit and shrub roses. It borders the Red River. Hence, our background are the native trees of the Red River Valley. I will discuss briefly this tallgrass Red River Valley Region and then swing into the mix of native plants, which thrive well in landscape settings. I will also emphasize their importance for the native butterflies and bees of our ecological prairie.

Yellow golden alexander, Zizia aurea, fronts a Japanese peony and tall, pink *Party Hardy* rose behind it for an English cottage garden appearance.

All meetings are free and open to the public.
